Container Exchange Route (CER)
The port of Rotterdam is one of Europe's most important logistics hubs. The exchange of containers between the various locations on the Maasvlakte therefore requires the most efficient and cohesive transport possible.
The Container Exchange Route (CER) has been constructed to achieve this. This 17-kilometre closed road network connects many of the terminals, depots, distribution centres and the State Inspection Terminal on the Maasvlakte. It contributes to safety, integrity, efficiency and sustainability in the port of Rotterdam.
How does the Container Exchange Route work?
The CER's 17-kilometre road network contributes to safety, integrity, efficiency and sustainability in the port of Rotterdam by optimally facilitating transport on the Maasvlakte. The routes have fewer delays and participating companies provide smoother container processing. That saves time, improves road safety and reduces emissions. Moreover, traffic flows better on public roads because they are less congested.
The closed nature of the route increases security. This is because it is harder to access cargo and helps customs in the fight against drug trafficking and undermining in the port of Rotterdam.
The network currently connects RWG's container terminals, ECT's Delta terminal, QTerminals Kramer's terminals and depots and the State Inspection Terminal. Distripark Maasvlakte and the front of ECT's Delta terminal will also be added to the network in 2025.
