Hydrogen in Rotterdam

Which Rotterdam parties are making the transition to hydrogen?

How can we help you?

Import of hydrogen

Rotterdam aims to be the leading port for sustainable energy. An important part of Rotterdam as Europe's Hydrogen Hub is the import of hydrogen.

Hello Hydrogen!

In Hello Hydrogen, we give you a special insight into the spectacular world of hydrogen, which is coming to life in Rotterdam.

A new energy system

Industry is switching to sustainable electricity and (green) hydrogen. This requires substantial supplies of affordable energy from sources such as wind and the sun.

The Port Authority is working with various partners towards the introduction of a large-scale hydrogen network across the port complex, making Rotterdam an international hub for hydrogen production, import, application and transport to other countries in Northwest Europe. The hub will also enable Rotterdam to maintain its position as important energy port for Northwest Europe in the future.

The role of hydrogen is growing. In addition to replacing natural gas to generate heat in the process industry, hydrogen is becoming a building block in sustainable chemistry to make products. Furthermore, hydrogen is developing into an important energy carrier in aviation and shipping, for heavy road transport and for heat supply in households and greenhouses

Transnational hydrogen economy

HY3 is a project of German and Dutch research institutes to provide insight into what a transnational hydrogen economy could look like in 2050. This report by HY3, TNO and Arcadis underlines the importance of an East-West connection.

Hydrogen Hub in Rotterdam

The advantages of establishing a hydrogen hub in Rotterdam are many. Large-scale use of hydrogen in industry can considerably reduce carbon emissions. A hydrogen network will also enable the port to continue to play a leading role internationally, as well as remain the motor of the national economy.
