Prinses Alexiaviaduct
To secure future accessibility of the areas around the Prinses Alexiahaven, the Port of Rotterdam Authority is replacing the single-level crossroads by constructing an overpass: the Prinses Alexiaviaduct.
The Prinses Alexiaviaduct replaces the single-level crossing on the Maasvlakteweg that currently connects the area around the Prinses Alexiahaven and the single-level rail crossing and the Container Exchange Route. The Prinses Alexiaviaduct connects the areas around the Prinses Alexiahaven and is essential for ensuring future enterprises are easily accessible to road traffic.
Rationale
Over the coming years, we will be developing the area around the Alexiahaven (approx. 300 ha) for new container terminals and biobased and circular industrial activities. Owing to the limited traffic intensities in the first few years after Maasvlakte 2 has been opened commercially, it was decided in the construction phase to create a temporary single-level crossing on the Maasvlakteweg adjacent to the Prinses Alexiahaven. In the coming years, road-traffic and rail-traffic flows will increase due to the development of the new factories and terminals around the Alexiahaven and the growth of container transhipment. Much higher traffic flows are also expected in the construction phase of these areas. The Prinses Alexiaviaduct provides sufficient capacity to absorb this and ensures accessibility for the future, as well as ensuring traffic from the Maasvlakteweg runs safely and smoothly and connects well with the area around the Alexiahaven.
More than just a viaduct
The Prinses Alexiaviaduct consists of an overpass crossing across the Maasvlakteweg, and bridging the industrial pipeline strip, the utilities strip, the Container Exchange Route (CER) and the rail tracks. The viaduct also connects to the Mekongweg and Máximaweg via single-level crossings. We are doubling the lanes on the Maasvlakteweg to 2x2 lanes and constructing a cycle path along the Mekongweg. After realisation of this project, we will remove the existing single-level crossing.
Sustainability
The criteria for awarding the tender include using asphalt and foundation material that is as sustainable as possible, signalling opportunities for using sustainable concrete mixes and use of a zero-emission or low-emission construction site. Sand will be made available to the contractor from reclamation sand deposits nearby. This prevents a lot of truck transport movements.
Phasing
Construction of the Prinses Alexiaviaduct will take place according to the following schedule:
Phases | Start |
---|---|
Tender | Q2 2024 |
Design and construction | Q3 2024 |
Commissioning of viaduct | Q4 2026 |
Local accessibility
During realisation, any damage, nuisance or restrictions for current infrastructure (road, rail, cables and pipelines) will be kept to a minimum as far as possible.
