Construction of Prinses Alexiahaven
The Port of Rotterdam Authority is preparing certain areas around the Prinses Alexiahaven to enable new clients to settle here in the coming years.
We are expecting the arrival of a biofuels refinery in the near future. But we also foresee potential client locations in the bio-based and circular industries and are upgrading the container cluster. During construction, an additional work and storage site is needed. This is one way in which we are working on the energy transition in the port area.
What is going to happen?
Maasvlakte 2 construction has always been phased on the basis of client needs. In anticipation of definitive client locations, the Port Authority is creating sites through reclamation, soil settlement and other necessary preparatory work. Some 85 hectares of land are now being created using just under 10 million cubic metres of sand. Sand from the Amaliahaven quay wall construction project is being cleverly reused for this purpose. We are also using sand dams to create the option of using sand released from other projects (e.g. from the Yangtzekanaal widening project) for the creation of the future sites (another 85 hectares). Smartly linking the work across different projects helps us reduce carbon emissions and save costs.
When is it going to happen?
Work began in July 2023 and will continue until the summer of 2024. The pipeline bridge used to pump sand from the Amaliahaven to the Alexiahaven is a striking feature, as are the dredgers hauling sand from the sea and rainbowing it into the Alexiahaven or spraying it through pipelines onto the new sites.
