Create openings to let water in
In new buildings, you can include openings that are closed off with hatches. If there is a flood threat, you can open them, allowing water to flow into the building. This reduces the water pressure on the outer walls and structure.
• Applicable to buildings;
• Spatial adaptation and crisis management;
• Permanent measure;
• Major investment;
• Prevents economic damage;
• Applicable at all flood depths.
There should be enough openings distributed across the outer wall. It must also be possible for water to flow safely through the building. You should therefore fasten into place loose items such as racks, shelves and products. Use water-resistant materials and raised electrical systems to prevent damage from the water that enters the building.
