Ten years of FutureLand
On Saturday 1 June, FutureLand will be making a day of it. Because 1 June 2019 marks the tenth anniversary of the information centre at Maasvlakte in the port of Rotterdam. And a birthday means treats! That’s why FutureLand will stay open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., why admission is free on all our tours and why visitors can expect all sorts of other surprises throughout the day. And if you’re feeling peckish, you can find a variety of food trucks on our grounds, with tasty treats like chips, organic ice cream and coffee prepared by a professional barista.
New exhibition opening: 'The Port is WORKING!'
Alderman Barbara Kathmann – responsible for Economic Affairs – will be adding colour to the festivities. In the afternoon, Kathmann will join Port Authority CEO, Allard Castelein, to open the new exhibition ‘The Port is WORKING!’, which will be open to the public from 2 p.m. on. ‘The Port is WORKING!’ shows the many ways in which the port contributes to our economy, highlights some remarkable port developments and goes into the range of jobs found in the port area. Across the Netherlands, the port actually creates employment for almost 400,000 people.
Career choice game
Robotisation, big data and the utilisation of new sources of energy create a demand for both existing and new skills. The career choice game shows visitors how anyone with talent can find the right job for him- or herself in the port. The exhibition, which runs until May 2020, was realised in partnership with the Educational Information Centre Mainport Rotterdam (EIC).
Extra tours & activities
Over the first ten years of its existence, FutureLand has developed from an information centre about the construction of Maasvlakte 2 into one of the most popular attractions in the greater Rotterdam area. FutureLand tells visitors everything they want to know about the port of today and of the future. Every year, over 100,000 port aficionados pay a visit to the centre. Last year, the millionth visitor was treated to a unique evening out. Dinner was served in a glass container, against a backdrop of futuristic terminals. On 1 June, visitors to the centre can once again count on a surprise. What’s more, admission is free to any of the regular attractions – whether it’s the FutureLand Ferry, FutureLand Express, the fossil-hunting expedition, the beachcombing treasure hunt, the kids’ quiz, or the crafts workshop. On 1 June, FutureLand will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
