Rethinking reefer logistics: Shifting from road to water via ‘cool corridor’

The ‘Cool Corridor’ between the port of Rotterdam and the DACH region ensures great frequency of sailings and minimises both full and empty truck movements. From seaport to inland ports, CO₂ emissions decrease by over 65%, highlighting environmental benefits.  

However, the common perception is still that reefer containers are most efficiently transported using trucks for swift delivery. Cargo owner Nordfrost, barge operator Neska Container Line, and inland terminal DP World all challenge this notion.  

By collaborating with chain partners and rethinking traditional approaches, they succeeded in showing the efficiency of inland barge transport for refrigerated containers. Reefer containers are only disconnected during brief loading and unloading, ensuring continuous temperature monitoring via onboard generators. Moreover, transportation through inland shipping guarantees more cost stability and consistent service frequency from Rotterdam's seaport to the hinterland, underscoring its significant advantage in reliability.
