High level port visit of the new U.S. Ambassador and U.S. Maritime Administration
The U.S. Maritime Administration (U.S. MARAD) and the new U.S. Ambassador to the Netherlands Shefali Razdan Duggal were introduced to the Port of Rotterdam on the 30th of November. The Maritime Administration is responsible of the United States’ waterborne transportation system.
They provide support for the country’s maritime infrastructure in relation to things, such as ships, port and vessel operations, security, and safety. In addition, the U.S. MARAD can also play a role in times of war and national emergencies by maintaining cargo ships to provide surge sea-lift. The delegation was welcomed by the port's CEO Allard Castelein and exchanged views on future challenges for ports and the current geopolitical landscape.
During the visit the delegation visited the Steinweg shortsea and breakbulk terminal in de Waalhaven, and sailed through the port area to end up at the 2nd Maasvlakte. The visit to Steinweg was focused on Steinweg’s redevelopment work it’s undertaking on site and the collaboration with the U.S. Army with regard to military logistics. During the boat trip the CEO of Zero Emission Services (ZES) gave a presentation on zero emission inland waterway transport.
