Climate change will lead to more rainfall and an increase in the frequency of extreme showers. It is expected that in 2050, extreme rain showers will occur five times more often than today.
These extreme showers could cause local flooding. This will have an increasing impact on outdoor spaces and on industrial sites and poses a risk for the safe availability of the infrastructure.

Port of Rotterdam Authority and the Municipality of Rotterdam have started a pilot programme for the Botlek area. That will tell us how vulnerable the water system is and how we can take appropriate measures.
